Expert Oil Diagnostic Services
Both insulating oil recondition (Oil Filtration) and reclamation are essential processes for maintaining the performance and longevity of transformer oils, but they serve different purposes and have distinct methods. The choice between reconditioning and reclamation depends on the condition of the oil and the desired outcome. Regular oil analysis is crucial to determine the appropriate course of action. By monitoring key parameters such as dielectric strength, moisture content, acidity, oil power factor and interfacial tension, you can determine whether reconditioning or reclamation is necessary to maintain the health and performance of your electrical equipment.
OIL RECONDITIONING
This is a process that eliminates or reduces physical contamination such as moisture, solid contaminants and dissolved gases by means of physical processes (filtration, drying, degassing etc.).
Benefits: Improves the oil's cleanliness and extends its service life by preventing the buildup of contaminants that can cause insulation breakdown.
Limitations: Does not address chemical degradation or remove all types of contaminants, such as acids and oxidation products.
OIL RECLAMATION
This is a process that eliminates or reduces soluble and insoluble polar contaminants from the oil by chemical and physical processing. Reclamation processes require special competence, equipment and experience. The resulting product should be evaluated on critical parameters to achieve information about process efficiency and to be able to estimate remaining lifetime. Benefits: Extends the oil's life significantly, restores its to an acceptable standard. It's also probably more cost-effective and environmentally friendly compared to replacing the oil entirely.
Limitations: Can be more complex and requires specialized equipment and expertise.
"Think of reconditioning as a regular cleaning or tune-up for the oil" "Think of reclamation as a major overhaul or restoration of the oil" Key Differences: Oil Reconditioning vs Oil Reclamation
Feature | Oil Reconditioning | Oil Reclamation |
Purpose | Remove contaminants | Restore oil properties |
Contaminants Addressed | Particles, moisture, gases | Acids, sludge, oxidation byproducts |
Process | Filtration, hydration | Adsorption, distillation, etc. |
Oil Condition | Relatively good | Heavily degraded |
Cost | Lower | Higher |
Frequency | Regular maintenance | As needed, less frequent |
